Understanding reservoir connectivity is key to optimize injection and production schemes in oil and gas reservoirs. Inter-well tracers are the only direct proof of mass-communication in hydrocarbon reservoirs and provides a cost-effective tool to determine the main flow directions in a reservoir. By comparing the injected tracer amount in an injector to the total produced tracer amount in a producer, the tracer data also gives direct quantification of the magnitude of the connections.

Tracer data integrates well with alternatives such as pressure interference testing and 4D seismic – at the same time complementing those data by revealing sub-seismic features or geological communication barriers not seen by pressure testing. Tracers are also effective in revealing any detrimental fast communication through thief-zones and open fractures.
